Anal glands should empty on their own each time your dog does a stinky #2. If they are not emptying on their own there is an issue. This should be addressed by a veterinarian. It used to be common practice for groomers to express them but they have found that expressing them at each visit can cause the glands to atrophy and no longer be able to do it on their own. And if not done properly it can lead to impacted/infected glands.
As soon as the vet says it is save to do so, which is usually after they’ve had all their shots. The sooner you can get them started with the grooming routine the better. Their first couple visits should be for puppy trims. This is an intro groom where they are exposed to the basics to help ease them into the process- the bath, the blow dryer (can be loud and scary 🫣 🙂), sanitary trim and clean out hair on the bottom of feet to get used to clipper sounds, trim up their face around the eyes, and trim their nails. This helps set them up for confidence with the whole process
